The Spybot Swarm Project

Spybot Swarms

While LEGO's Spybots seem to be very popular with kids, they have not been as big with AFoLs.

This is an attempt to make them a bit more interesting to all the adults that have one or two tucked away on their shelves.

This year (2004) at Brickfest, everyone who's interested in participating can bring their own Spybots, download the program (see below), and let them all interact with other Spybots.

The Software:

I don't have the software written, yet, but I plan on writing something anyone will be able to download to their Spybot.

We will be able to download software at Brickfest to any robot that doesn't already have the required program.

The Hardware:

This is where I will need help. Everyone should bring their Spybots. The Spybot should be assembled, and have [good ] batteries. It doesn't have to be assembled per original instructions.

** make sure you Spybot is marked, so it can be returned to you.  One way to mark it is to put a piece of paper in the battery compartment, with your name, e-mail address & phone number.

Tricks:
  • 1) Form a line
  • 2) Move like a swarm (do not bump each other)
  • 3) Attack
  • 4) Stop!
  • 5) Search for other Spybots
  • 6) Follow beacon (lead Spybot)
  • 7) Quite(?)
  • 8) Set Clock
  • 9) Execute Timed event
  • 10) Line Dance?

  • All messages will be sent to the King Spybot, and he will send commands to all other Spybots.

Send messages via ping. Include distance from king in normal Ping. Form line:

  • low/slow/no ping when searching for end of line
  • fast ping when you are end-of-line, but have no followers.
  • low/slow ping when in line, with follower (ping in order?)

  • note to self: Post message to bring all Spybots
